Paediatric Sleep Problems

Sleep affects every aspect of a child’s daily functioning, and well being. Thus, it is not surprising that inadequate, disrupted, poor quality and, at times elusive sleep constitutes one of the most common complaints raised by parents to paediatricians as well as to child mental health providers.

Sleep is also an important health education issue.

Not only are sleep problems treatable, but many are preventable. Primary care providers are in the optimal position to identify sleep concerns because of their regular access to children and families during well-child encounters. We, the health care providers educate parents about normal sleep in children and teach them strategies to prevent sleep problems from either developing in the first place or becoming chronic when problems already exist.
